There is a captivating history to the Cambodia gambling halls that lie just across the border from nearby Thailand, in which gambling hall wagering is against the law. Eight gambling dens are situated in a relatively small area in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia casinos is in a prime spot, a 3 to four hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 biggest gambling centers in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a huge business with Thai workers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The astonishing capital acquired from the gambling dens ranges from seven and a half million dollars to more than twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a few controls requirements for gambling den ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mainly Thai; although, financing sources are ambiguous. The borders are formally open from 09:00 to 1700, and though visas are allegedly needed to pass, there are means around this, as is real of most border crossings.
The first Cambodia casinos premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in the late nineties, leaving only a single gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a docked bateau gambling den, highlights one hundred and fifty slot machines and sixty gaming tables. The Naga gambling den is open all day and night with 42 tables of mini-baccarat banque, 4 tables of twenty-one, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The initial gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown quickly opened. A total of 150 one armed bandits and five table games at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machines and 68 table games at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains 300 one armed bandits and 70 gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slot machine games and 96 gaming tables, including eighty seven baccarat banque (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machine games and 66 of the common table games, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the eight casinos in Poipet, again in a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machines and ninety seven games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a comprehensive resort and hotel building that contains a number of conveniences accompanying the gambling hall, which houses 10,000 sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty slots and eighty eight table games.
