There is a captivating history to the Cambodia casinos that reside just across the dividing line from neighboring Thailand, where gambling hall wagering is not allowed. Eight gambling halls are situated in a generally tiny space in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia gambling halls is in a prime location, a three to four hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the two most popular wagering locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a huge business with Thai laborers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a couple of Westerners. The phenomenal income gained from the gambling dens ranges from $7.5 million to more than twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a number of restrictions constraints for gambling den ownership. Ownership is required to be largely Thai; however, investment sources are ambiguous. The borders are formally open from 0900 to 5:00 p.m., and even though visas are for all intents and purposes required to cross, there are methods and means around this, as is accurate of most borders.
The original Cambodia gambling halls opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving only one gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored barge gambling den, highlights 150 slots and sixty tables. The Naga gambling den never closes with 42 tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, four tables of blackjack, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The first gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown quickly opened. There are 150 slot machines and five table games at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machines and sixty eight gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains three hundred one armed bandits and 70 gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slots and ninety six table games, including 87 baccarat banque (the most beloved game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slots and sixty six of the common tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the eight casinos in Poipet, again in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slots and 97 table games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an all-inclusive resort and hotel complex that contains a number of luxuries accompanying the gambling hall, which offers 10,000 square feet of one hundred and thirty slots and 88 table games.
