There is an appealing background to the Cambodia casinos that reside just over the dividing line from neighboring Thailand, in which gambling hall wagering is prohibited. Eight gambling halls are anchored in a generally small area in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia gambling dens is in a perfect spot, a 3 to four hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the two largest gambling centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a thriving business with Thai laborers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a couple of Westerners. The phenomenal income gained from the casinos ranges from $7.5 million to more than 12.5 million, and there are a couple of controls requirements for gambling den ownership. Ownership is presumed to be largely Thai; although, financial sources are ambiguous. The borders are formally open from 09:00 to 17:00, and though visas are supposedly needed to pass, there are ways around this, as is true of many borders.
The initial Cambodia casinos premiered in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were forced to close in the late nineties, leaving only a single gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a docked ship gambling den, contains 150 slot machines and sixty table games. The Naga gambling hall never closes with 42 tables of mini-baccarat banque, four tables of 21, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The original gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in the late nineties and the Golden Crown before long followed. There are 150 slots and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four one armed bandits and 68 table games at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains 300 slot machines and seventy tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machines and 96 gaming tables, including eighty seven punto banco (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 one armed bandits and sixty six of the familiar table games, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the eight gambling halls in Poipet, also a part of a motel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machines and ninety seven casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an all-inclusive resort and hotel compound that contains numerous amenities aside from the gambling den, which has 10,000 sq.ft. of 130 slots and 88 gaming tables.
